Mother visits the grave of her son
(This English writing by Thái Huy Long takes its inspiration from the poem “Đi Thăm Con” in Vietnamese language by the poet Hoang Phong)
dithamcon

Today I come to see you
Here I bring you the offerings
A pot of steamed glutinous rice
A hand of bananas too

Now you are lying here
Oh! From the time you were sleeping peacefully in the crib
With adorable smiles and bubbly drooling on the bib
Till your first sitting attempt and on… and on…I love you….my dear

The long two- day hard road trip
From our village at my old age
All the difficulties to tell but I skip
For me, you always still in the first crib stage

You fell down many times when first learning to walk
But at age eighteen, you fell down here and never stood up again
At the border of this remote rubber plantation, writhing in pain
Here enjoy the offerings while we talk

You were killed by a tiny bullet
Like your father was so previously
From a gun for simple thrill or by pure hatred
Did the shooters enjoy it victoriously ?

Did they celebrate it in burst with joy ?
Reward and medal
Why is the hatred, my short-lived little boy
They thought, in their evil intentions, you intermeddle ?

Your pain in this place was indeed excruciating
Piercing through your body, the tiny bullet knocked you down
The terrible feelings before your life completely shutdown
Put them aside and and wake up reviving

Today I bring you a hand of bananas and glutinous rice
My love for you never changed since you were a baby in crib
The time you learned to speak, and played ad lib
Like all children are so devised

Oh my son, bananas a bit bruised and glutinous rice already cold after 2 long travelling days
But my love for you  got  warmer during this journey
They killed you deliberately at this deserted rubber forest border by false accusations against your mistakes
Sit beside mom, and keep your mind at peace when your soul fully awakes

When you were at the fateful eighteen year old
Still a doting mother but with brain power level at the low threshold
I had and still have the empathy for mothers like me
For people across both sides of this terrible conflict to love each other, I make a plea

Although most mothers are richer or smarter than I and maybe we have opposite political views
They also love their children like I do
At your birth, babble and play... With time my love for you grew
And other mothers are on the same track too

Wake up by my side, I am waiting
With the usual offerings of bananas and glutinous rice for you
It has been twenty years fleeing
Long journeys to this plantation visiting you, have been in the queue

If you were still alive
I would already be a happy grandma, and much on me your lovely children would rely
Remember the nice and skillful country girl named Hai
In our neighborhood and you both already did jibe

I miss the chance to be on the groom side when you were at your age norm
Bringing some betel and areca for pre-wedding ceremony
To her parents’ house with you to ask for her hand leading soon to your matrimony
I pretty much, to traditional Vietnamese customs, like to conform

Now she already got married and left for Saigon
And you got stuck here since that brutal year, my son
I remember the sound of your joyful laughs and familiar activities in our backyard
Every evening you were waiting for me on my way back home at the village dyke for some snacks, diehard !

Meeting time with you flying so fast, its is almost nightfall
I have to go back home, alright ?
Recently, I get sick more often and my grey hair more noticeable but I still can try to visit you again, all in all
I ‘ll see you next year with glutinous rice and bananas, but now …..I am deeply sorry to say good night.

Thái Huy Long

ĐI THĂM CON
Thơ: Hoang Phong
Trình bày: Hương Sen
https://thuvienhoasen.org/a33017/di-tham-con
